It has everything you want from a January wardrobe, whether you're finally kicking your fitness routine into action - or simply keeping it comfortable post-Christmas.
There are a number of reasons I’ll be living in sports leggings and sweatshirts this month. One, it’s my personal way of tricking myself into exercise later in the day – after all, if you’re dressed the part, it seems a waste not to at least commit to a few sun salutations in the lounge on your lunch break. Secondly, and exercise aside, it’s exactly the kind of comfortable uniform that you need to gently ease yourself through a cold and dreary January. Think leggings styled up with a cashmere knit and slippers for an easy and acceptable work from home look, or layered with trainers for your first Couch to 5k. And lastly – and perhaps most importantly - because one of my favourite high street retailers has released a new batch of my absolute favourites.
Marks & Spencer's Goodmove collection first launched in spring 2020, and I’ve been waxing lyrical about their affordable, practical and fashionable sportswear staples ever since.
The giants approach their activewear with the same exacting attitude as they do everything else, focusing on proper quality, sustainability and innovative technology that could rival even the best-loved sports brands. Better still, they do it at a price that's actually achievable for anyone, whatever their sports level. They’ve put extra effort into developing their black-out fabrics – a must for anyone fearful of bending over in front of a full class – as well as waterproof Stormwear and reflective tech suitable for running outdoors. With updated styles for 2022 and an expanded repertoire (M&S activewear now even caters to men and children, as well as for specific activities like Yoga), it’s exactly the sort of thing we want to spend our money on at this time of year.
As is required for January, the legging selection is mighty - from its newest bodysculpting style to a brilliantly jazzy seamless gym edit. But the Goodmove collection also includes a whole host of mix-and-match layering pieces that will work perfectly for everything you're up to right now, whether you’re sat on a computer chair or on your Peleton. Scroll on to discover the pieces Closer loves below.

But, since I'm not a runner, I also have never wanted to overspend on all the gear with no idea. Luckily, M&S have gone the extra mile with running-centric pieces that are perfect for people like me. This funnel neck top is perfect for heat control, with moisture-wicking fabric that is quick drying and breathable for comfort.
